No trip to the gorge would be complete without a visit to one of the Columbia River Gorges wineries. Located in Washington our Gorge wineries are classic, charming and a perfect fit for any afternoon outing. For us the vote is in on some of our local favorites.

Maryhill winery is at the top of our list as it is one of the most scenic properties throughout the Gorge. Located on the Washington side Maryhill sits on a bluff just over the Columbia River. Voted 2009 Washington Winery of the year this fabulous location offers a little something for everyone.

Aside from having some of the best scenic views this winery is also home to unlimited summer and spring activities, concerts and dinners. There is never a shortage of things to do and see at this location.

Our next stop is Waving Tree, which is located just below the famed Stone hedged memorial, amidst the sprawling Columbia River also in the community of Maryhill Washington. Their location takes advantage of one of the longest growing seasons in Eastern Washington. Aside from having fantastic wine this winery also caters to a plethora of activities and at the end of the season opens its vineyards up for locals to pick a satchel of grapes for themselves.

Further east sits Cascade Cliffs Vinyards and Winery. Offering primarily red wines, Cascade Cliffs specializes in the classic Piedmont varietals (Barbera, Dolcetto, and Nebbiolo) of northwest Italy, as well as popular French varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah. There philosophy is simple: a profound respect and honor for our natural surroundings will produce equally profound wines.

The company here is refreshing and relaxing and the information is substantial. This winery has been noted for its excellence in numerous publications and periodicals. Make sure to catch this vineyards Summer Solstice party March 20, 2010.

Fantastic Columbia Gorge Hikes

The Columbia River Gorge is home to a plethora of amazing recreational activities, however one stands out beyond all the others and that is simply the hike. The Columbia River Gorge has some of the most beautiful wonders of the world and 60% of them are at the end of a trail.

While staying in the Columbia River Gorge it is important to know exactly what you cannot afford to miss. These Scenic gorge areas are our home and we are proud to share them with the exploring tourists of the world. We want to tell you a few of our absolute top five favorite hikes that are available nearly all year round.

Strawberry Island

#5 on our list of must do hikes is located about 12 miles west of Carson Ridge. Now I want you to keep in mind these top five are based on the amazing natural wonders that lie at the end of the trail.

Strawberry Island is located in North Bonneville Wa and although it would not seem like much from the entrance point of view the exquisite trails around this now landlocked island lead to some amazing views. Once Hamilton Island, Strawberry Island received its name from Lewis & Clark who traveled through in 1805, stating that the island was “Covered with grass interspersed with Strawberry vines”.

The Island itself has trails made out of the natural grass and wild flowers. Your choices range from a short quarter mile jaunt straight for the river or a 3-mile radius option walking you through timbers and bush. The highlight of course is when you land right above the waters of the Gorge. Taking a seat on a bench looking onto a very nostalgic setting almost like a painting. To the South you have the cascades so close it is as if you can reach out and touch them and to the north you have views of Beacon Rock and Hamilton Mountain.

This hike is especially great for a family and or pets. It is a quiet relaxing trail and depending on the path you take it is easy to moderate in its inclines. The Sunsets at this location is my main reason for making it # 5 on my list of Fantastic Hikes as they are beyond reality.

Beacon Rock

#4 is a historical must do when spending time in the Columbia River Gorge. Beacon Rock is the second largest monolith in the world, and it is the eroded core of an old volcanic neck. The 848-foot high spire is composed of light colored vesicular Andesite, and is steeply featured on all sides. The trail itself is more of a cement walkway crossing 27 bridges and contains 47 switchbacks in its mile distance. Like Strawberry Island, which can be viewed from the summit your views are spectacular as this hike ends with a 360 degree view of the west end of the Columbia River Gorge.

Beacon Rock is located in the Beacon Rock state park so is extremely outfitted with everything you would need for a perfect picnic afternoon. The park in itself also contains various hikes up and down the river as well as biking and fishing options. This is a great hike for any level as the grounds are extremely functional and you can go at your own pace. I have seen couples in there 80’s and families with multiple children and strollers taking this Columbia Gorge adventure.

Larch Mountain

#3 on my list is a very unique experience, which ends with a 360 degree view of “The Ring of Fire”. That’s right a ring of 5 volcanoes (Rai nier, Adams, St Helens, Hood and Jefferson) that make their home here in the Pacific Northwest. Now there are two methods that will take you to this ultimately jaw dropping location.

The Difficult path is the complete Larch Mountain Trail, which heads off at Multnomah Falls Lodge. This trail is a five hour, 4000 foot exhausting climb through old growth forests, past multiple waterfalls and various viewpoints of the Gorge. It is a total of 14.4 miles round trip with your most crowded area being at Multnomah Falls itself.

Personally the highlight of this trail is the summit that leads you to Sherrard Point (viewing the Ring of Fire). For the hiker looking for a nice brisk walk or hike through the old growth and natural settings without the grueling 14 miles this is the perfect option. From Corbett Oregon you would simply drive up Larch Mountain Rd and Park in the designated parking area and hike the 0.3 miles to the view.

Eagle Creek

#2 is a path to a canyon full of waterfalls and forest settings. This is one of the most exquisite paths, passing half a dozen waterfalls. At the end of the 4.3 mile hike you reach a 30 foot Punchbowl Falls.

Due to the fact the trail was blasted out of basalt Cliffs I would not suggest children as there are some extremely rigid areas that do not accommodate railings for the hikers convenience.

Falls Creek Falls

#1 and one of the most amazing natural wonders, this trail ends at a waterfall you think only could be imagined. During the Summer months the area around this waterfall has colors so green you have to see it to believe it. The mist meets you as you walk to the ledge to see the massive amounts of water plummeting to the creek base.

This trail can be taken two ways as there is a lower falls and an upper falls. Of course the upper falls trail leads you to the summit of the falls and allows you to look over as the massive water races to the bottom. This trail is moderate in difficulty and is a total of 4 miles through massive old growth. This trail progressively gets steeper as you reach for the top of the falls however there is a lot of history along which is clearly defined by the Gifford Pinchot’s information stations.

The other choice to this trail is the lighter 1.7 mile hike to the base of the falls. This does incline as you reach the falls however 70% of the trail runs along the creek and also sets you in magnificent old growth and historical spots not seen by the other trail to the summit.

These scenic wonders are just the tip of the barrel of the beauty available here in the Columbia River Gorge. Most of these hikes can also be biked on and in some cases horse back riding. Complementing the fantastic beauty is the expansive history that each location gives you. From ancient Indians to Lewis & Clark your not just getting a workout, you are getting an unforgettable experience.

Twas the Night Before Christmas

I am writing this at the window in the main office. My first thought on how to end the 2009 December Blog included "what the heck is with this weather" and "Construction".

Mind you if you are a follower of this piece you are aware of the daily updates on our face book and Twitter site and how I feel as well as where we are at on both these subjects.

At any rate our year in review has ultimately been a manifestation of hard work and conquered goals. The true spirit of being able to have and hold what you dream could not be any more apparent then through the pure determination and understanding that Pete, Latisha and the Staff here at Carson Ridge affirm each and every day.

There are the golden rules in life, some of which are placed to hold you in a certain light and others placed to let your light out. The shinning light that our property has built up and beamed this past year is apparent everywhere. Behind this fence you enter to a state of ahh. A state of relaxation, rejuvination and you leave with a few extra breaths for the trip home.

With this year we have been able to open our doors to our community as well. Giving an option of personal growth, relaxation and ultimate personal experience through our Yoga Classes and Reiki as well as Thai Massage. Although we have merely broke the surface, the concrete platform that has been established is bound to build up great things for our neighbors and friends.

We are about to embark on the biggest and best year yet. With the completion of our new additions and the addition of new life we are excited to invite you to our retreat. The Sanctuary has now opened at Carson Ridge and with it comes a since of refreshment for our local community and Guests. The dynamic has changed at our quint B&B from a getaway location to place of of peace and solitude. A refuge if you will, that mends the soul without even knowing that you are being mended or needed mending.

With our first week behind us we can only be thrilled to be off to a great start. . The Sanctuary as mentioned in our publications, was created to be a gathering place for community to love, to laugh and to heal. Everyone should be allowed the life they dream of, and a place to feel joy and bliss.

Our Yoga, Meditation and healing classes come in different forms. For instance tonight we will envelope ourselves in Hatha-Anusara. Hatha a gentle yoga that emphasizes posture alignment enhancing muscle tone, flexibility and a peaceful mind while Anusara brings in a specific system of alignment principles as well as a creative, heart centered practice. This provides both a physical challenge and an inspiration to awaken you to the potential of your spiritual purpose.

A fantastic point to make also is that Yoga right now at the Sanctuary is open to all levels. If you have never been to a Yoga class then this is the perfect time for you to step in and feel what it is all about. The classes are small and intimate and you can receive more of the one on one that you may need. Also keep in mind that our bodys are quickly adaptable and will learn faster then your mind feels it should be allowed, no matter weight or body type.

Your body will thank you by quickly shedding those excess pounds, clearing all those negative thoughts from your head and heart and allowing you to breath a little easier and more efficient.

With a new year comes new things. . .

Carson Ridge is excited to say good bye to a great 2009 year and welcome, with high expectations, a fantastic 2010. More then just a new year we have so many new things coming for our guests and for our public. To start I would like to cordially introduce our newest venture "The Sanctuary."

After practicing Yoga for five years Latisha soon realized that it was no longer enough for her to just practice, she wanted to share this amazing knowledge. "Everyone should be allowed to live the life they dream of, to be free of pain and stress, to feel complete joy and bliss" says Latisha.

The Sanctuary was created to be a magical gathering place for a community to love, to laugh, to heal, to let go, to find connection, acceptance, awareness presence and compassion for all and for all to find the unconditional enjoyment of the human experience that comes from remembering who we really are through art and the science of Yoga.

Pranayama-Meditation, Hatha - Anusara style, and Yin and just the beginning of what is offered at various times. These classes are open to the Public however spaces are limited, so please make sure to call to register for the class.

Giving Thanks and Getting Ready for the Holiday Season

Can you believe that we have managed to make it a year round to November. This time last year Pete and Latisha were heading to India. The cabins were quiet but just enough . . and the rain, oh the rain . . It rained so hard water was just about everywhere and when it stopped raining it started snowing!!

It is funny to think back on. . and crazy how fast it was here and now gone. I wanted to take a moment and give a special Thank You to Pete and Latisha for being an outstanding team and giving me such a great place to work. They are truly amazing people in all their accomplishments as well as just in their hearts . . They have amazing family's that they have let me share as well as great friends that I have got to meet this past year.

Aside from being apart of such a beautiful property at Carson Ridge I have another family and I am Thankful for it everyday!

Thank you also to our fans for following us each and every day and month and Thank you to all of our guests weather it was once or weather we will see you in December for the forth time we could not do this without you.

I would also like to thank all of the Chambers and Associations who continually send people our way and talk so highly of us to the people passing through. We also could not do it without your support and kind words.

Legends of Love in the Columbia River Gorge

The Columbia River Gorge was before anything else, home to various Native American Tribes. Although stories will very dependent on the tribes, a favorite legend and one more commonly heard is the Love story of a beautiful Maiden and two brother Indian Chief's.

Tyhee Sahle and his two sons came down the Great Columbia River. In awe of the land and how beautiful it was each son stated their desire for a piece to them selves. This started a quarrel to which Sahale then decided too shoot two arrows. One he shot to the North and One he shot to the West. Sahale then said to his sons, "Go. Find the arrows. Where they lie, you shall have the land".

One son went over the plain to the Klickitats and was the first grandfather of the Klickitats. The other son followed his arrow to the Willamette Valley, in turn becoming the first grandfather of the Multnomahs.

Then Sahale raised great mountains between the country of the Klickitats and the country of the Multnomahs. He did so, so the tribes would not quarrel. To the white man these were called the Cascade Mountains. The great river was deep and broad. This river was a sign of peace between the tribes. Sahale made a great stone bridge over the river, so that the two tribes might be friends. This was called " The Bridge of Tomanowos".

The tribes grew but they did evil things. They displeased Tyhee Sahale. Therefore the sun ceased to shine, and cold and snow appeared. The people were unhappy for they had no fire. Only Loo-wit said the Indians were cold. So Sahale gave fire to the people. Thus Sahale built a fire on the bridge of the gods, and there the people secured fire. Sahale promised to Loo-wit eternal youth and beauty. Thus Loo-wit became a beautiful Maiden.

Then began the cheif's love for Loo-wit. Many of the chief's loved her because of her beauty. Then came more chiefs, Klickitat from the North and Wyeast from the west. To neither would Loo-wit give an answer . Therefore the chiefs fought, and in turn thier people fought. This made Sahale very angry. Therefore, because blood was shed and because the Great River was no longer a sign of peace, Sahale broke down the Tomanowos Illahee.

The great rocks fell into the water, where they still lie today. When the water is quiet, buried forests can be seen even to this day. Thus the Tribes were separated by the Great River.

Then Sahale made of Loo-wit, Klickitat and Wiyeast snow peaks. Always they were to be cold and covered with ice and snow. White men call them Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Adams and Mt. Hood.

Fall is un-officially here!!

Like it or not the chill in the morning is back in full force. The last few days have reminded us of what we have been missing here in the Gorge. . You know, that reason why everything is so green. The rain is back and it is October, hard to believe the summer season has officially ended and winter is creeping it's why back toward our direction.

As we reflect back on this, some what hasty summer season, we have accomplished and welcomed more then just great guests. In June Latisha joined us from her six month stint in India. During her travels she collected a wide range of handmade jewelry complete with precious stones and silver as well as fantastic handmade silk scarves and numerous other foreign treats. This has allowed us to expand our gift shop immensely to a regular "candy store" for the young at heart.

Another by-product of her return has been our new addition which we are very excited about, the Gifford Lodge. The rustically new -aged Indian themed room officially became available late August 2009. This Gifford Lodge features a custom hanging bed, 7ft Jacuzzi bathtub and a 5x7 walk-in shower to name a few. This new addition along side the time of year has marked an official starting point of our upcoming expansions throughout the CR property. By next spring you will have the option of three more cabins on our property as well as expanded garden and water feature areas.

Keep in mind our additions and expansion are planned precisely to the nail and will be quick and painless . . and of course we will keep you posted along the way via twitter and face book, so be sure to follow!

Oh and we can't forget our other new additions to Carson Ridge. Penny & I am pleased to introduce you to Lexy & Bear, they were adopted in July and have quickly adapted to the B&B life. Although these Miniature toy Shepard's are typically a work oriented breed, you will find them lounged out, paws first, on the greens or near the front door to welcome you.

As we lightly tread towards a retreat center for those bound for rejuvenation and relaxation we are asking you what you would want in a destination property? What do you look for?

Summer is on the home stretch . . .

It is hard to believe that Summer is winding it's way down. The days are slowly getting shorter and yesterday being our first rain in weeks gave a nice reminder of what we have to look forward to. Things have been so busy recently that as you can tell I am a little behind on our blog here so bare with me as I catch you up.

Carson Ridge has been crazy busy which is spectacular. We have hosted guests from all over the world and at his point we are not slowing down. Our new packages have proven to be in high demand as the Wind Surfing and Kite Boarding lessons with Hood River Water Play have left guests ready for the next wind and of course Zoller's white water rafting trips have more then fulfilled expectations on those triple digit temperature days. We cannot leave out however the massive Salmon and Sturgeon that have made their way back with our guests experiencing the ultimate in guided fishing offered by Steve's guide Service.

Although the above are on the extreme side our more lay ed back guests have not been disappointed with the various hikes we have sent them on. Some gorgeous photos have also came back of spectacular waterfalls and beautiful scenery all tucked away here in the Columbia River Gorge. Off the trails Martin with Martins Gorge Tour's has kept guests busy experiencing the local tastes of our neighborhood . . . Having 30 + wineries in a short 30 mile radius makes for a exciting afternoon.

Now what have we been doing? Well aside from almost completing our new Healing Center which is located off our main building we are in the planning process of actually starting construction on our three new Luxury Suites this Fall. We are thrilled to be able to offer the new suites to our guests as well as complete our planned yoga platform, garden expansion and property development. This all in mind for our goal of being an exclusive state of the art retreat enabling you to fully relax & rejuvenate you mind, body and soul.

We invite you to come visit as the Fall colors will be working their way in soon into next month and the beauty of the Gorge will become even more radiant while you gaze from your cozy window in front of your fireplace or snuggle up on the porch with a soft fleece blanket. .

Round the World and Back

After Pete returned home from the Orphanage in early January, Latisha went on to start her yoga training in Thailand. From there doors kind of opened hear and there and after some extended training in a few different areas she has found her way back home to the cabins here in the Columbia River Gorge.

So what now? In her journey both extensive and extreme she has came back with so much knowledge it is hard to know where to start.

From Yoga to Reiki to Thai massage Carson Ridge Private Luxury Cabins will be able to evolve to a blissful retreat for those in search of solitude, release, rejuvenation, healing and growth. Of course we will always be that quick romantic getaway or the spontaneous surprise however the subtle growth will allow our beautiful property to have unlimited resources and cater to whatever anyone may throw our way.

Pete has been working away on our newly added healing center and Luxury Suite. In the fall we will start on the first phases of construction on three additional private luxury suites and adding simple additions like yoga platforms and additional garden areas.

We are already what you have been searching for the catch is we will simply always get a little bit better. . .

Summer is here!!

On Monday we will ring in a new month and of course the official Summer 2009 will began. What does that mean?

Well May is giving us a pretty good definition of summer weather as the past week has been high 80's & low 90's and for the travel community it means summer vacations, staycations and old fashioned outdoor relations.

The BBQ's will fire up, the yard furniture is being pulled out, the burn ban's will commence, the insects will come out in the masses and out here in the gorge the festivals and fairs will began. This summer you can look forward to everything from Beer and Wine gatherings to Big Foot Bash's.

Hood River will ring in it's Farmer's Market's and the nomadic Kite Board & Wind Surfer's will make their way from the South to the North landing in the Gorge for some of the best water's in the world.

For Carson Ridge we will be sitting back and enjoying just another day in paradise. . . . This is in between our various Healing Center Renovation and Property Grooming projects.

Guests from all over the world are making their way to the Columbia River Gorge this summer. Germany, New York, Flordia, California, Arizona the list goes on all planning their yearly vacation right here in the recreational Mecca of the world and laying their heads in our pillows.

April Showers Bring May Flowers...

The statement could not be any more true. Our second day of sunshine after some well deserved days of continuous rain has the flowers popping up all over the property. The cherry blossoms are blooming and color is quickly entering the Gorge once again.

From a birds eye view the best is yet to come. The waterfalls in the area are gushing with winters left overs and yet I saw my first Kite Boarder out on the Columbia yesterday.. He was by himself which may say something.. but none the less he was out their attacking the waves and the wind. If this is not a sign of summer being on its way I don't know what is.

Another sign is the golfer's I keep noticing out on the tee's. We have partnered up with Skamania Lodge to now offer golfing packages for our guests. Their course is a PGA certified layout with some of the top professionals in the business to assist in your experience. They also have a full service pro shop to get you all the "must have" gear.

Our guests this weekend were thrilled after their scheduled wine tour with Martin's Gorge Tours. In celebration of their first anniversary they planned a delightful day of winery hopping together only to find out the night before the excursion that Mrs. Guest was pregnant. Needless to say they enjoyed it just the same and it allowed for great conversation each place they went. We would like to send out another congratulations to them from all of us here at Carson Ridge.

The Sun is Shining!! The Birds are Singing!!

Do you smell it? That refreshing aroma as you walk outside? The scent that seems to be traveling through the breeze? SPRING.. it is here.

We are looking out the window watching those orange colors slowly change back to the green we all know and love in the gorge. Although the groundhog let us all know winter was far from over and snow was on our windshields when we awoke Thursday morning yesterday reminded us all of what we have coming our way.

Friday the 13th in Febuary? I don't no about you but the only chill I have is in response to the snow i am watching gracefully come down outside.

Did you know According to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated one billion valentine cards are sent each year, making Valentine's Day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year. (An estimated 2.6 billion cards are sent for Christmas.)

What is the history of Valentines Day? That would depend on who you asked..

One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men — his crop of potential soldiers. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.

According to one legend, Valentine actually sent the first 'valentine' greeting himself. While in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl — who may have been his jailor's daughter — who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed 'From your Valentine,' an expression that is still in use today. Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories certainly emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic, and, most importantly, romantic figure. It's no surprise that by the Middle Ages, Valentine was one of the most popular saints in England and France.

Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons where they were often beaten and tortured.

A friend recently stated she wasent going to by in to the lemming tradition and my responce was in todays society at the rate we are all going when unless said to do so do we stop and let go and celebrate and enjoy those around us?

Wonderful Winter

It is hard to think that winter just really got here. It is even more hard to believe that we are already a month into a new year and that tomorrow brings the first day of February. While most will be huddled in small rooms tomorrow bracing themselves on the game of the year some of you may be wondering how to fill that gap.

I can assure you a drive to Skamania County would treat your senses. Traveling down I-84 or 14 have amazing sights this time of the year. Multnomah Falls is bursting and the Columbia Gorge is a sight in itself freckled with patches of ice and large flocks of birds.

Even better say that you are busy for tomorrows game. How many have their Valentines plans in check? Sneak away for a romantic getaway... we will do all the work for you. Chocolates, flowers and all the frills all you have to do is show up.

Happy New Year!

2009 has welcomed some absolutely beautiful sun sets in recent days a far cry from the Arctic blasts that 2008 closed out with. With the morning chill at a steady 28 degrees the cars and the roads sheeted with a thin layer of ice you cannot help but love to be in the beautiful Columbia River Gorge.

Rain or shine sleet or hail summer, winter or fall there is always something to see and embrace in this beautiful country. With this quick melting of near by areas we have seen numerous water ways that either have never been their before or are double and triple their usual flow. The waterfalls in their area are a must see as they shoot out of cliff and mountain sides.

This weekend we are hosting guests from not to far away. They made the quick drive from portland and Vancouver to get lost in the ridges and mountains. We would like to invite you to come get away as well and envelope yourself in the Columbia River Gorge while staying nice and cozy in front of your fireplace with a wonderful book.

Christmas in the Gorge

Looking out the window at 2 feet of snow is not something I had planned to be viewing today. The gorge has been blanketed with the beautiful white flurry's off and on for about two weeks however today starts a series of snow days that are not going any where to fast.

Our guests are not afraid, chains and all cabin five was determined to get their vacation even if it meant a very slow trip from Puyallup WA. The snow sets the mood and let me tell you we are open and waiting for your reservation. The is the perfect opportunity to disappear for a few days and get lost in a book, curl up next to the fire place or simply be.
