February Valentine’s Special

It’s easy to brush Valentine’s Day off as a Hallmark Holiday. After all, why must you declare your love through chocolates and flowers on February 14, just because the calendar says it’s Valentine’s Day. Just who was this Valentine, anyway?

Valentine is thought to have been a Roman priest or bishop who lived in Rome in the third century. He is said to have officiated marriages in spite of the fact that Emperor Claudius II had banned marriage (a foolish attempt to create less distracted soldiers).

Valentine was imprisoned for his impertinence, and later killed either for refusing to stop performing marriage ceremonies, or for refusing to recognize pagan deities, or both. He is believed to have written a farewell note to a young woman, signed “From Your Valentine” before he was executed on (circa) February 14, 270 AD.

February 14th became a day on which young Roman men sent adored women handwritten greetings declaring their affection – called Valentines. The tradition was strong enough to last until the 14th century, when Geoffrey Chaucer forever linked Valentines and love in his The Parliament of Fowls,

For this was on St. Valentine’s Day,
When every fowl cometh there to choose his mate.

It’s a lovely tradition, really, to remember a man who risked his life in order to help young couples marry. So this year, in honor of St. Valentine’s Day, the whole month of February is given over to Valentine’s Celebration at our luxury Hood River Lodging.

Valentine’s Day may be February 14, but in these busy times, we understand that it can be difficult to get away on one particular date. Spend two nights at our romantic Columbia Gorge Cabins any time during the month of February, and receive a bottle of local wine and two wine glasses. Ski, snowshoe, visit wineries, or simply spend time together in your  cabin, cuddling by the fire, soaking in the jetted, or watching the sun set.

It may be easy to ignore Valentine’s Day until the last minute, but this year, think of the man who risked his life – and indeed gave his life – so that lovers could wed. The least you can do is put a little effort into showing how much you care. Take a vacation. Go someplace new. Get out Portland, Seattle, or Eugene, or wherever you live. Spend two nights together at our romantic cabins Columbia River Gorge.
