City Dwellers Crave Nature
Seattle, Portland and Eugene are all cities with plenty of green. Portland has Waterfront and Forest parks, as well as the Japanese Gardens; Seattle residents have Discovery Park and the Arboretum; Eugene has Meadowlark and Skinner Butte parks. All of which are wonderful slices of heaven for a quick nature fix. Still, some people crave something more.
Many guests of our cabins in Washington State are city dwellers looking to reconnect with nature. Most travel from Seattle (about 3.5 hours), Portland (45 minutes), and Eugene (3 hours) to stay in the Columbia River Gorge, close to the Gifford Pinchot National Forest and Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. Our guests crave the vastness of the gorge, the quiet of the forest, and the fresh air.
Nearby Mount St. Helens is perhaps the best place to witness the awesome power of nature. There are many ways to experience the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument, from climbing the volcano to viewing it from the many roadside observation areas available. And for an up-close and personal experience, the back country is always open to the serious hiker.
One of our favorite hikes is through Lava Canyon, on the southwest side of Mount St. Helens. The first half mile of the trail is wheelchair accessible, and from there becomes increasingly steep and difficult. The Lava Canyon Trail is like walking through a sculpture garden; magnificent works have been carved by mud and water, and lava flows have their own creative flair. Take the side trail to “The Ship”, a 100-foot tall lava formation, or find a good spot to sit and watch the Muddy River rushing down the canyon. This is indeed a place to admire the power of nature.
Isn’t it time you escaped from the city? Our Columbia River Gorge cabins are a luxurious retreat in the wilderness.
