Why You Need to Hike the Dog Mountain Trail in Washington

What to Expect Along the Dog Mountain Trail in Washington

Are You up for the Challenge?

The views you see on the Dog Mountain Trail in Washington are awe-inspiring, but you have to work for them. This is one of the most challenging hikes in the Columbia River Gorge, so some fitness and perseverance are necessary to complete the loop. Parts of the trail are very steep, and there is an elevation gain of 2,820 feet.

What to Expect

While this thrilling 6.3-mile loop is meant for experienced adventurers, it’s also one of the most beautiful trails in the Gorge! The views that you experience from the mountaintop offset the strenuous climb. Steep inclines lead to majestic views, and the yellow balsamroot wildflowers that dot along the route in May make the hike well worth it all on their own. Among the meadows is an old fire lookout spot that reveals gorgeous views of the side of the Gorge. However, you’ll find the best views at the summit.

Reaching the Peak

The peak of Dog Mountain offers truly unmatchable views of the Gorge. Look out upon Mount Hood as it looms in the distance, and watch the Columbia River rush by far below. In the spring, colorful blooms pop out among the greenery as the wildflowers take over.

Once the panoramic scenery at the top of the Dog Mountain Trail in Washington comes into view, soak in your incredible surroundings in silence for a few moments. Then, set up a picnic at the peak so you can enjoy a meal to take in the beautiful landscape!

Do I Need a Permit?

If you’re going to hike Dog Mountain on the weekends or Memorial Day during the high season (late March through mid June), you’ll need a day-use permit. Each hiker on the trail will need to show proof of purchase so be prepared with either a printout or with your receipt on your phone.

Dog Mountain also has a trailhead fee for parking if you drive there

What to Pack

When you embark on a strenuous hike, it’s important to be prepared! Wear the right gear such as comfortable, sturdy shoes and appropriate clothing based on the weather. Bring plenty of water and snacks to reenergize yourself during your trek. Plus, you’ll probably want to bring a camera for the beautiful views at the peak!
